Blue Light Acne Treatment

Reduce Acne With Blue Light Laser Therapy

Acne will affect most people at some point in their lives. It can be a devastating condition that impacts a person’s self-esteem and social life. It may begin during puberty and make reappearances throughout our lives, changing from month to month or year to year. In some cases, acne doesn’t occur until adulthood.

Acne Can Be Caused By A Number Of Factors Including:

  • Overactive Sebaceous (Oil) Glands
  • Blocked Follicles
  • Hormones
  • Use Of Anabolic Steroids
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Improper Skincare/Makeup Products

The good news is that acne is a very controllable condition thanks to today’s advancements in treatments and products.

Below is a brief summary of the 5 types of acne. When treating acne at our Edmonton Clinic, we always complete a thorough skin analysis to determine both the cause and type. This helps us decide the best course of treatment for you.

  1. Blackheads – Blackheads are caused by clogged pores from excess sebum (oil) or dead skin cells. The surface will appear black or yellow.
  2. Whiteheads – These are similar to blackheads in look, however the top of the pore is closed which makes them more difficult to extract.
  3. Papules – Inflamed, sore, red bumps. May cause scarring.
  4. Pustules – Like papules, however, pustules are filled with pus. They often have a white or yellow tip. Sometimes these pustules can be very inflamed and lead to scarring.
  5. Cystic Acne – Cysts are characterized as being tender, raised, and hard with no surface opening. Whether the cysts are large or small, this type of acne often causes scarring.

Bacteria are very sensitive to the blue light spectrum. Unlike topical treatments that work to decrease inflammation and bacteria on the surface of the skin, light treatment eliminates acne-causing bacteria (otherwise known as P.acnes) before it can feed off of the oil glands that cause redness and inflammation.

There may be some mild discomfort during the treatment. Most clients describe the feeling as a slight sting or ‘snap’. There is often less discomfort with subsequent treatments as your skin becomes clearer.

We do our best ensure you’re as comfortable as possible and many clients tolerate this treatment with no problem.
