What Are BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?

BOTOX® is a drug doctors have been using for years as an injectable muscle relaxer that reduces the signs of wrinkles and fine lines. The protein is derived from Botulinum toxin which is produced from a bacteria called clostridium botulinum which works by blocking the nerve signals to the muscle, allowing the muscle to act paralyzed. This results in the softening of the appearance of fine lines, and wrinkles on the face. BOTOX® treatments are minimally invasive and are most commonly used in the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. This popular anti-aging treatment is recognized as a safe and highly effective solution to smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and offers fast treatments with no downtime.

How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

BOTOX® derives from a bacteria called C. Botulinum that can be commonly found in lakes, forests, and the intestinal tract of mammals and fish. This bacteria is generally harmless, however, if populations reach too high, the bacteria begin to produce botulinum toxin, a deadly neurotoxin. When used appropriately, by experienced and highly-skilled injectable nurses, BOTOX® is safe and offers many anti-aging benefits for your skin. It works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles in your face where you are being injected. As a result, the muscle cannot contract leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.

What To Expect During A BOTOX® Treatment

Your BOTOX® appointment will likely be quick and easy as this is a simple treatment that requires no downtime. Your skin specialist will begin by going over past medical history as well as the information you went over in your consultation. They will then begin by cleansing the areas to be injected and may offer numbing solutions to reduce discomfort. Your injectable specialist will then begin with your injections and apply ice and pressure to reduce swelling in the affected areas. After your treatment, you can resume your regular lifestyle as there is no need for any post-treatment care.

How Long Does BOTOX® Last?

BOTOX® takes anywhere from 24-72 hours for the toxin to take full effect and will last anywhere from 3 months to a year. Results vary from patient to patient depending on skin type. As the BOTOX® wears off, your muscle will regain movement which will result in noticeable fine lines and wrinkles again. BOTOX® is not a permanent anti-aging solution and requires regular appointments.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of BOTOX®?

Although the botulinum toxin is considered life-threatening in higher doses, smaller doses - such as those used in BOTOX® are considered safe and FDA approved. According to the U.S. FDA, only 36 cases of severe side effects were reported with the cosmetic use of BOTOX® between 1989 and 2003. Although the risk with BOTOX® is minimal, you must see a dermatologist or an experienced injectable specialist for your injections. If your BOTOX® is not properly administered to FDA guidelines and regulations, you could face adverse side-effects such as:

Pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Dry eyes
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Excessive tearing

Most side effects should only last a few days after receiving an injection. If you experience any side effects for an excessive period of time, make sure to speak with your skin specialist as soon as possible.
If you experience any of the following botulism-like side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty speaking and swallowing
  • General weakness
  • Loss of bladder control

Although these side effects are rare, you must receive treatment from a licensed medical professional to avoid any risks associated with BOTOX®.

FAQs

Q: Will my BOTOX® injections be noticeable to other people?

With a combined 20 years of experience, our team of specialists will give you natural-looking results. Every patient receives optimal dosing based on their anatomy to keep your natural facial expressions without deepening or forming fine lines and wrinkles.

Q: Do BOTOX® injections hurt?

Any injections in the skin will cause some discomfort. BOTOX® needles are very small so pain is usually very minimal. Your specialist may also offer you the option to apply a topical anesthetic to numb the injection area to prevent any discomfort.

Q: How often should I get BOTOX® injections?

Many people see effects last anywhere from three months to a year, but several factors may shorten or lengthen that period. These factors can include:

  • Your age: Older individuals with less muscle tone may see results diminish faster than those with younger, tighter facial muscles.
  • Your diet
  • Your facial expressions and structure
  • How much sun exposure your skin gets.
