Permanent makeup is becoming increasingly popular amongst male and female patients, and it can be used to dramatically and safely enhance facial features, or even disguise the appearance of scars or skin pigmentation.

Permanent makeup, whether it’s for eyebrows, lips, or other areas, is ideal for patients who have:

  • Allergies to traditional cosmetics
  • Active lifestyles
  • Physical limitations (eg. vision loss or arthritis) that make it hard to apply makeup

8 Factors That Affect Healing After a Permanent Makeup Treatment

One of the most important parts of a permanent makeup treatment, whether it’s performed on eyebrows, lips, or other body parts, is the healing process. This period can differ from patient to patient and the time it takes to heal completely is based on several factors.

This includes:

  1. Skin Type: Scarring tends to affect different skin types based on collagen production. In general, darker skin is more susceptible to raised keloid scars, while lighter skin may take on a more sunken appearance.
  2. Age: Older and looser skin will take longer to heal and regenerate compared to younger skin.
  3. Blood circulation: Good blood circulation encourages healthy and fresh blood flow through the body and will considerably speed up your healing time.
  4. Diet: During your recovery period, following a balanced and healthy diet that contains power foods such as protein, zinc, and Vitamins A and C will promote healing.
  5. Stress levels: Stress has been shown to affect the immune system, which in turn will cause a delay in your healing. That’s why it’s important to stay relaxed and looked after following your procedure.
  6. Smoking: Not only does smoking delay healing, but it also increases your risk of complications, such as infection or leakage.
  7. Exposure to sunlight: After your treatment, you must avoid the sun. This is because excessive sun exposure can cause reddening, blistering and inflammation, which can then lead to scarring or infection in the treatment area.
  8. Certain medications: There are certain medications that may interfere with your platelet function and ability to form clots, significantly affecting healing. That’s why it’s important to talk to your skin care specialist about any medications you are taking before undergoing a micropigmentation procedure.

6 Tips For Taking Care of Your Skin After a Permanent Makeup Treatment

For most patients, the healing time for a permanent makeup treatment is 7-10 days. Whatever your skin type, age, or lifestyle, here are 6 simple ways to protect your skin following your micropigmentation procedure:

  • Avoid makeup, skin care products, or sunblock on the treated area for at least 14 days.
  • Do not pick your wound, as this will cause scarring. Let the scabbing naturally exfoliate off.
  • Limit your sun exposure for at least 4 weeks following your treatment.
  • Avoid sleeping on your face for the first 2 weeks to protect the area that has been treated.
  • Limit any activity that will cause excessive sweating (such as exercise) during the healing period.
  • Avoid skin treatments such as Botox for at least 1 month following your permanent makeup procedure.

Additional Tip: Slight bruising and swelling is very normal after a permanent makeup procedure. Apply an ice pack to reduce any discomfort. You may also experience temporary itchiness or dryness in the treatment area.
