Your Main Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis

Are you feeling frustrated and self-conscious about excessive and uncontrollable sweating? At our Edmonton medical spa, we provide customized hyperhidrosis treatments to minimize your symptoms and restore your quality of life.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common condition that affects a large number of Canadians. It is caused by overactive sweat glands and can significantly affect an individual’s quality of life. Hyperhidrosis can either affect the whole body or only certain areas of it.

If left untreated, this condition can severely impact a person’s social and physical life, as well as their emotional well-being. Often, sufferers will:

  • Avoid physical contact with other people (e.g. shaking hands or hugging)
  • Avoid physical activity because it makes their symptoms worse
  • Find daily activities, such as driving, more difficult
  • Become socially withdrawn and self-conscious about their sweating

Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis

If you are one of the many Canadians who suffer from hyperhidrosis, there is good news! You have a number of effective treatments available to you, including lifestyle changes and Botox, that can help minimize your symptoms, reduce any discomfort, and let you live a happier life.

Lifestyle Changes

When it comes to treating hyperhidrosis, there are some changes you can make to your lifestyle or your daily activities that may help control your excessive sweating. This includes:

  • Avoiding triggers such as spicy foods, alcohol, or hot drinks
  • Weight loss
  • Managing your stress levels
  • Wearing loose and/or light clothing
  • Using talcum powder to absorb excess sweat
  • Using armpit shields that can absorb excess sweat and protect your clothes

These lifestyle changes are inexpensive and relatively easy to do and the benefits of these shifts will be noticeable almost right away. You may also want to talk to your skin care expert about any topical treatments (medication or antiperspirants) that can help reduce your symptoms.

Botox Treatments for Hyperhidrosis

If you find that topical treatments and lifestyle changes don’t alleviate your symptoms, then your skin care specialist may recommend Botox treatments. Here’s what you can expect from the procedure:

How it works: Botox is an FDA-approved skin treatment for hyperhidrosis and it can eliminate any undesirable symptoms by blocking the chemical nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands.

How it is administered: The Botox is injected into the treatment area using an ultra-fine needle, preventing sweat from being produced in those areas.

How long is the treatment? The duration of the treatment will depend on the size and number of treatment areas. On average, it will take approximately 20 minutes.

When will I see the results? The Botox will take effect quickly and within a few days, you will be able to enjoy a reduction in sweat. However, it could take up to seven days for the Botox to take full effect.

Are Botox results permanent? The results of the Botox treatment are long-lasting but not permanent. You will require follow-up treatments every 6-8  months to maintain your great results.
