Top Tips For Mole Removal Aftercare

Moles, medically known as nevi, are extremely common and usually harmless. If you are feeling concerned about a new mole, or you want to get a mole removed for cosmetic reasons, our team of highly qualified skin specialists can create customized mole removal treatments for the safest and most satisfactory results.

Moles are common, typically harmless, skin growths that develop due to an overgrowth of pigment-producing cells. While they typically form during childhood and adolescence, new moles can appear in adulthood. Possible causes of a new mole include:

  • Genetics
  • Having a weakened immune system
  • Having fair skin
  • Exposure to ultraviolet radiation

Most moles that appear during adulthood are non cancerous. However, if a new mole arises, or if you notice any changes to your existing moles, such as pain, bleeding, or changes to size and shape, you should visit your dermatologist for a checkup.

Mole Removal Aftercare: What You Need to Know

If you have had a mole removed, it’s important to follow your skin care specialist’s aftercare advice to ensure the safest and most satisfactory results. Depending on the type of mole removal you have, you may have sutures or a small open wound.

In either case, the site is usually bandaged to protect it from injury or infection. You must do your part in keeping this clean so proper healing can take place.

How to Care For Your Stitches

If you have received stitches, there are certain tips you should follow until they are removed. These include:

  • Keep the area dry for 24 hours
  • After this time, gently wash closely around the site without washing or pulling the stitches
  • Dry the site with a clean towel
  • Apply a topical antibiotic to the site.
  • If the area was bandaged, replace the bandage or leave it open to the air, as recommended by your dermatologist.
  • Keep the site clean and dry, washing it twice daily until it has healed.

How to Care For an Open Wound

If you have an open wound, you may need to keep a dressing over it or leave it to the air, depending on your skin specialist’s directives. In both cases, the site must be washed and dried at least once daily. To prevent the wound from scabbing prematurely, your doctor may suggest coating the area lightly with an antibiotic ointment.

5 Things to Avoid After Mole Removal

What you don’t do following your mole removal is just as important as what you do after this minor surgery. During your recovery, you should avoid:

  • Shaving at or near the site
  • Strenuous activity
  • Using any skin cleansers, peroxide or other irritants
  • Prolonged exposure to water
  • Medications that may cause bleeding

In addition, you must contact your dermatologist immediately if you have any of the following after your treatment:

  • Fever
  • Unusual or prolonged pain
  • Redness or discharge of pus
  • Re-opening of the wound
  • Stitches that have come out prematurely
  • Reappearance of the mole after removal

I came in to enquire about some skin imperfections and botox etc. The staff was especially sensitive to what I needed and complimented what I already had. I hope the staff excel in the areas of dematology/age tolerations in their career. They are a must with this area of beauty. Thanks for all of the valuable information.
