Say Goodbye to Skin Moles With These 3 Treatments

Moles are a small cluster of coloured skin cells which can form anywhere on the body. They are usually harmless but if you are feeling self-conscious about your appearance, we offer customized skin tag and mole removal services at our Edmonton medical spa.

A mole is a skin imperfection that can be tan, brown, black, or even skin coloured. They are usually harmless and people can live with them without any complications. However, your dermatologist may suggest a skin mole removal if the mole is:

  • Dangerous and needs to be removed for precise identification and treatment to eliminate the risk of cancer.
  • Protruding and easily irritated by clothing (eg. it catches on bras or belts)
  • Considered potentially dangerous and you want to eliminate the risk now instead of having regular check ups.
  • Aesthetically unappealing and causing you to feel self-conscious

At Glo Skin and Medspa, our team of qualified dermatologists provide cosmetic skin tag/mole removal services for the face and body using state of the art technology.

3 Mole Removal Methods You Should Know About

Benign-appearing moles do not require treatment, but some patients may decide to have them removed due to cosmetic reasons. In such a case, this simple procedure can be done in a dermatologist’s office using topical or local anesthetic.

How long will it take? In most cases, the procedure can take approximately 15 minutes depending on the type and number of moles being removed.

Will there be a scar? While all mole removal methods leave a small scar, choosing the best method for the location and mole type, as well as following proper post-care, will give you the best cosmetic results.

If you are considering having a mole removed for cosmetic reasons, here are 3 ways in which this can be done:

  1. Surgical Shave Removal. This is often recommended if you have a smaller mole. Your dermatologist will use a scalpel or special blade to shave the mole flat with the skin. The area will heal with a small scab (it typically lasts for a week) and no stitches are needed.
  1. Punch Excision: If you have a smaller mole with a deep component, this is a good treatment option. A small instrument, slightly larger than the mole, is used to cut around the mole. Depending on the size, 1-2 stitches will be placed and removed in one week.
  1. Surgical Excision. Dermatologists often recommend this for larger moles, moles that have a deeper component, or those that are in cosmetically sensitive areas. A scalpel will be used to cut around the mole and a line of stitches is placed to bring the skin together.

Recovering From Cosmetic Mole Removal

The recovery after this procedure is very straight-forward, but it’s important to follow your dermatologist’s post-care instructions carefully to ensure the best results. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • After the procedure, most patients don’t require pain medication. If you have discomfort, an over-the-counter painkiller such as Tylenol is adequate.
  • You can return to most of your usual activities almost immediately. Showering and shampooing hair can be done after 24 hours.
  • Exercising should be avoided for the first 48 hours.
  • Your dermatologist may place steri-strips over your incision and it’s recommended that you keep them on for at least 2 weeks to help promote healing.
  • If you have stitches, you will need to have them removed after 7 days.

I came in to enquire about some skin imperfections and botox etc. The staff was especially sensitive to what I needed and complimented what I already had. I hope the staff excel in the areas of dematology/age tolerations in their career. They are a must with this area of beauty. Thanks for all of the valuable information.
